I also modified it by making a deep V of ribbing in the calf, which turned out great. Also, for toe up folks, in order to not have a tight top of your ribbing, try this when casting off:
K2, bind off 1, m1, bind off 1, k1, bind off 1, p1, bind off 1, p1, bind off 1, repeat. By adding stitches and also casting off in rib, it makes a more - what, fluted? - top of your ribbing which won't be tight and lame.
